We start early from Athens to unload the packed car at Agios Andreas camp, about 40 minutes away. We decided to take the majority of the donations to this camp as we had learned that the refugees there had absolutely no help, no distribution of clothes, shoes or anything else, in fact no warehouse. There were not even any volunteers until a couple of weeks ago when it seems that the army obviously realised that they needed the help of volunteers. At this moment they invited Fred Morlet of Humanitarian Support Agency to come. Fred has been working as a volunteer in Greece for 15 months day in day out. A man with a huge heart and an army training, he created the Kara Tepe volunteer camp on Lesvos, an real exemple of an efficiently run camp.
Nous sommes partis tôt d'Athènes avec la voiture pour décharger au camp d’Agios Andreas les paquets de donations emballés en France. Agios Andreas est à environ 40 minutes du nord d’Athène. Nous avons décidé d’amener la majorité des dons dans ce camp puisque nous avions appris que les réfugiés n’y avaient absolument aucune aide, aucune distribution de vêtements, de chaussures ou toute autre chose, en fait il n’y a pas d’entrepôt. Il n'y avait même pas de volontaires jusqu'à quelques semaines quand il semble que l'armée s’est rendue compte qu'ils avaient besoin d’aide de bénévoles. Ils ont fait venir Fred Morlet de l'Agence de Soutien Humanitaire. Fred a travaillé en tant que bénévole en Grèce pendant 15 mois, jour après jour, sans un jour de congé. Un homme avec un coeur énorme et une formation de militaire, il a créé le camp de bénévoles Kara Tepe sur Lesvos, un réel exemple d'un camp bien géré.
We arrived at Agios Andreas, situated in what could have been an agreable pin wood, but it was a piteous sight. It was raining only slightly but the dilapidated tents of the residents were already leaking even in this light rain. There were no dustbins and rubbish was lying everywhere. Several army men were sitting drinking coffee and obviously monitoring any one that arrived. So I went up to explain to them that we had come under the umbrella of HSA and would wait for Fred to come. Otherwise we would not have been allowed to stay. Fred arrived with Shireen, the only other volunteer there. We unloaded the car into the one container that had been provided and they seemed pathetically grateful for the things we had brought, especially the shoes and welllies.
Nous sommes arrivés à Agios Andreas, situé dans ce qui aurait pu être un bois de pin agréable, mais c’était un site pitoyable. Il pleuvait légèrement, mais même avec cette légère pluie les tentes délabrées des résidents avaient des fuites. Il n'y avait pas de poubelles et les détritus trainaient partout. Plusieurs militaires étaient assis à boire du café et de toute évidence observaient toutes les arrivants. Je suis donc allée leur expliquer que nous étions venus de la part de HSA et que nous étions attendus par Fred. Sinon, nous n’aurions pas été autorisés à rester. Fred est arrivé avec Shireen, la seul autre bénévole présente. Nous avons déchargé la voiture dans le conteneur qui était là et ils semblaient considérablement reconnaissants et presque émus pour les choses que nous avions apportés, surtout pour les chaussures et les bottes.
Fred showed us around the camp, a small camp of around 200 people mostly Syrians, but with a potential capacity of many more tents or other forms of dwellings. There seems to be a governmental blockage to increasing the numbers, too long to explain here, but is heartbreaking when one thinks of the homeless refugees sleeping on the streets of Athens, Thessaloniki and elsewhere.
Fred nous a fait visiter le camp, un petit camp d'environ 200 personnes pour la plupart des Syriens mais avec une capacité d’accueil de beaucoup plus de tentes ou d'autres formes de logements. Il semble y avoir un blocage gouvernemental pour augmenter le nombre, et ce serait trop long à expliquer ici, mais c’est déchirant quand on pense aux réfugiés sans-abri qui dorment dans les rues d'Athènes, Thessaloniki et ailleurs.
The priority for this camp is to get better prepared for winter. Thousands of refugees are living in these precarious conditions all over Greece. If Isoboxes or other suitable housing cannot be provided in sufficient quantity for all, then the tents must at least be waterproofed, some sort of flooring provided, a drainage system installed to take away the flooding rains (tents were flooded inside at the last heavy rains) and a distribution of clothing and shoes installed rapidly so the residents can be warmly clad.
We were shown a tiny room that has been offered as a potential warehouse but needs cleaning and shelving provided before any clothes can be stored in it. This being an obvious priority Michel and I went straight into the nearby town and bought enough shelving that we will return tomorrow to start installing. As we had a lunch invitation from some Afghan residents of another camp that I had met in May we had to leave, promising we would be back to help tomorrow prepare the little room and install the shelves.
La priorité pour ce camp est de mieux se préparer pour l'hiver. Des milliers de réfugiés vivent dans des conditions précaires dans toute la Grèce. Si des logements acceptables ( type algeco, ou isobox) ne peuvent pas être fournis en quantité suffisante pour tous, les tentes doivent au moins être imperméabilisées, avec une sorte de plancher fourni, ( au moins des palettes )un système de drainage installé pour enlever les pluies torrentielles (des tentes ont été inondées à l'intérieur lors des dernières pluies abondantes) et une distribution de vêtements et de chaussures mis en place rapidement de sorte que les réfugiés puissent être vêtus chaudement.
On nous a montré un local minuscule qui a été occupée comme entrepôt potentiel, mais qui a besoin de nettoyage et d’étagères avant que les vêtements puissent être stockés. Ceci étant une priorité évidente. Michel et moi nous sommes allés directement dans la ville voisine et nous avons acheté des étagères. Nous allons y revenir demain pour aider à les installer. Comme nous avions une invitation à déjeuner de résidents Afghans d'un autre camp que j'avais rencontré en mai dernier, nous avons dû partir, mais en promettant que nous serions de retour demain pour aider à préparer la petite pièce et installer les étagères.
Our next stop was the Oinofyta camp, a camp for Afghan refugees that I knew from my previous visit. Tamim had invited us for lunch in his tent, and we were treated to a fantastic meal that Zarena his beautiful wife had prepared. Theirs is a true Romeo and Juliette story of love and tragedy, but that will be for another time. After lunch we went to the see medical team, a small team of wonderful volunteer doctors and midwifes of Adventist Help. We delivered the medicines they had told me that were needed, mostly contraceptif hormones, but also some medical items. Michel was immediately invited to give his advice about a difficult case being examined and a list of other priorities given to us.
Notre prochain arrêt était le camp Oinofyta, un camp de réfugiés Afghans que je connaissais de ma précédente visite. Tamim nous avait invité pour le déjeuner dans sa tente et nous avons partagé un repas fantastique préparé par sa merveilleuse épouse Zarena. Leur histoire est une véritable histoire comme Roméo et Juliette remplie d'amour et de tragédie mais ce sera pour une autre fois. Après le déjeuner, nous sommes allés rencontrer l'équipe médicale, une petite équipe de merveilleux médecins bénévoles et sages-femmes. Nous avons livré les médicaments dont ils avaient besoin, la plupart du temps des hormones contraceptives. Michel a été immédiatement invité à donner son avis sur un cas difficile en cours d'examen et une liste d'autres priorités nous a été donné.
We visited the camp which Michel did not know but I was amazed and delighted by the improvements that the volunteers had done since my last visit. In particular the school, with several little classrooms was wonderful. We took Tamim and his family to the nearby town to buy a sim card for the phone we had brought his wife and then sadly said goody to them and the lovely people of this camp for the time being.
The evening we spent in nearby Chalkida town and ate with a Syrian friend , a young man of 29, an accountant from Damascus. I had known Sulayman from when he was living in Ritsona camp and is now living in town thanks to support from some wonderful generous people in Spain. There are so many ways that these homeless people can be helped if one looks.
Nous avons visité le camp que Michel ne connaissait pas, mais je fus impressionnée et ravie par les améliorations que les volontaires avaient faites depuis ma dernière visite. En particulier, l'école, avec plusieurs petites salles de classe c’est merveilleux. Nous avons pris Tamim et sa famille pour les amener dans la ville voisine pour acheter une carte SIM pour leur téléphone puis nous avons ramené sa femme et dit tristement au revoir ainsi qu’aux gens adorables de ce camp.
Le soir, nous sommes passé dans la ville voisine Chalkida et nous avons mangé avec un ami Syrien, un jeune homme de 29 ans, un comptable de Damas. Je connaissais Sulayman quand il vivait dans le camp de Ritsona et il vit maintenant en ville grâce au soutien de quelques merveilleuses personnes généreuses en Espagne. Il y a tellement différentes façons de pouvoir aider ces personnes sans domiciles si on regarde….
