According to the official UNHCR figures, there are at present, 26th September 2016: 28263 refugees in camps on the mainland, 13948 refugees in camps on the islands and 8633 in the accommodation scheme. The real number of refugees is undoubtedly higher due to all the people in the squats and streets and is probably at least 60,000.
À l'heure actuelle, selon les chiffres du UNHCR, le 26 Septembre 2016 il y a 28263 réfugiés dans les camps sur le continent, 13948 réfugiés dans les camps sur les îles et 8633 dans des hébergements. Le nombre réel de réfugiés est sans aucun doute beaucoup plus élevé en raison de toutes les personnes qui sont dans les squats et les rues.
Visiting camps, meeting old friends and making new ones, making contacts and seeing needs are are vital part of helping the refugees. Having been to three camps near Athens, a safe house run by volunteers in central Athens, a major squat and having visited refugees housed by volunteers in the north, we decided to try and visit one of the main camps of the 15 camps in the Thessaloniki area of north eastern Greece and one of the 6 main camps in north western Greece.
Revoir des amis, faire des nouveaux amis, faire des contacts pour apprendre les besoins sont un travail important pour apporter de l'aide et rapporter aux amis en France la situation en Grèce. Comme nous étions allés dans trois camps près d’Athènes, dans une maison organisée par des bénévoles dans le centre, un squat et nous avons rendu visite à des réfugiés dans des appartements payés par des bénévoles dans le nord, nous avons décidé d'essayer de visiter l'un des principaux camps importants des 15 camps dans la région de Thessaloniki, au nord est de la Grèce et l'un des 6 principaux camps dans le nord ouest de la Grèce. Ces visites sont essentielles pour établir des contacts, pour évaluer la situation du moment et savoir quel soutien et quelle aide nous pouvons apporter.
As I had heard a lot about Nea Kavala from friends working there this was our first choice. On arriving, the size of this tent camp was overwhelming, stretching far into the distance. With a stated capacity of 4200, the population at a certain time earlier this year reached nearer 7000 people! The numbers are now reduced to a more comfortable 2000.
Comme j’avais beaucoup entendu parler de Nea Kavala par des amis qui y travaillent ce fut notre premier choix. En arrivant, nous avons vu des tentes à pertes de vue sur une étendue importante. Avec une capacité déclarée de 4200 personnes, la population à un certain moment au début de l’année avait atteint près de 7000 personnes ! Les chiffres sont maintenant réduits de façon plus confortable à 2000.
Nea Kavala is a strictly controlled army camp and as we were not attached to any group that had access, we did not try to enter the main gate in front of the army. Instead, we decided to walk along the high wire netting just observing, until we came across a large part where the netting had been broken down and access was no problem, so we just walked in. The residents of this tent camp are wondering what will become of them, the cold was already there and it gets extremely cold in that area in winter. There is some talk of container houses being installed but nothing seems definite yet.
Nea Kavala est un camp strictement géré et contrôlé par l'armée, comme nous n’étions pas rattachés à un groupe qui avait un accès pour y rentrer, nous n’avons pas tenter d'entrer par la porte principale, en face de l'armée. Nous avons décidé de marcher le long du filet de haute voltige simplement en observant, jusqu'à ce que nous sommes arrivés sur une grande partie où le filet avait été cassé et l'accès n’était pas un problème, donc nous y sommes allés.
Les résidents de ce camp sous leurs tentes se demandent ce qui va leur arriver, le froid était déjà là et il fait très froid dans cette région en hiver. On entend parler de maisons de conteneurs en cours d'installation, mais rien ne semble encore définitif.
Almost immediately, a man who we passed obviously wanted to talk to us. He was a Kurd but it turned out that he spoke Greek reasonably well so communication was possible! In particular he wanted to talk about his wife who was suffering badly. Apparently some shrapnel had lodged in her back and the treatment she was being offered by the camp doctors from the German Red Cross was a couple of pain killers a day for which she had to return and queue up for each day. We had already heard a similar story from a volunteer friend. As it was difficult to go far into the camp we then left and went on our way westwards to Ioanina.
Presque immédiatement, un homme qui de toute évidence nous avait vu passé voulait nous parler. Il était Kurde mais il s’est avéré qu'il parlait assez bien le Grec donc la communication était possible ! Il voulait nous parler particulièrement de sa femme qui souffrait énormément. Apparemment, son dos avait reçu des éclats d’obus et le traitement qu'elle avait eu par les médecins du camp de la Croix-Rouge Allemande était un anti douleur pour une journée mais pour lequel elle devait retourner dans la file d'attente chaque jour pour en avoir un autre. Nous avions déjà entendu une histoire similaire d'un ami bénévole. Comme il était difficile d'aller loin dans le camp nous sommes ensuite partis pour continuer notre chemin vers l'ouest à Ioanina.
Katsikas in the Ioanina area was our next choice. This is also a tent camp that at present houses around 700 refugees, although the total capacity is 1500. This was a good choice for us as it was totally different from Nea Kavala, being very open, with no difficulty of entering although the army presence was very obvious, and there was even a rather agressive police man present (who tried to make Michel erase his photos!)
There has been a certain amount of unrest in this camp, with a fairly big demonstration a couple of weeks ago when it was realised that new tents were being installed! The residents realised that not only this meant that they would be moved into these tents and thus spend the winter under canvas, but also that the lovely gardens and personal spaces they had created around their tents were going to be bulldozed. As well as the cold weather that has already begun, torrential rains a couple of weeks ago flooded many of the tents. Although some people have already been moved into town, the majority will be living in the tents. We were told by an official that some more people were going to be rehoused in a building near the airport that is being renovated for the purpose. This is due to be ready by November.
Katsikas dans la zone de Ioanina était notre prochain choix. C’est également un camp de tentes qui abrite actuellement environ 700 réfugiés, bien que la capacité totale soit de 1500. Ce fut un bon choix pour nous car il était totalement différent de Nea Kavala, étant très ouvert, sans difficulté pour y rentrer bien que l'armée était très présente, et même un peu agressive notamment avec la présence d’un policier (qui a essayé de faire effacer les photos prises par Michel!)
Quelques semaines auparavant Il y a eu un certain nombre de troubles dans ce camp, avec une assez grande manifestation à cause de l’installation de nouvelles tentes ! Les résidents ont réalisé que non seulement cela signifiait qu'ils seraient déplacés dans ces tentes pour y passer l'hiver, mais aussi que les beaux jardins et espaces personnels qu'ils avaient créés autour de leurs tentes allaient être détruits et rasés. Le froid est déjà arrivé, les pluies torrentielles il y a quelques semaines ont inondé la plupart des tentes. Même si certaines personnes ont déjà été déplacées en ville, la majorité vivra dans les tentes. On nous a dit que certaines personnes allaient être relogées dans un bâtiment près de l'aéroport qui est en cours de rénovation. Cela devrait être prêt en Novembre.
A further tour of the camp showed us the construction of bigger tents with wooden floors was being directed by the UNHCR. Some are already inhabited and there is an electric supply to each one which will provide some heating as winter approaches.
Une visite du camp nous a montré que certaines améliorations ont été faites comme la construction de grandes tentes avec des planchers en bois organisées par le UNHCR.
Certaines sont déjà habitées avec une alimentation électrique qui fournira du chauffage à l'approche de l'hiver.
The medical service is provided by Doctors of the World who have installed four containers and set up a waiting room with seating under a canvas. It looked very well organised.
We were very happy to meet some of the volunteers there. These were individual volunteers from several countries who had come alone, at their own initiative and expense. In fact nearly all the help to the refugees in this camp is provided by individual volunteers.
The first person we met was a Canadian, Evangeline, a teacher who had come to help the refugee children learn english. She invited us to visit the wonderful little tent school, made up of several different classrooms! In other rooms a Belgian girl was teaching maths and an English guy was also teaching english, there were four teacher volunteers there when we visited. The whole school had been built and was run by volunteers.
Le service médical est assuré par Médecins du Monde qui ont installé quatre conteneurs et ont mis en place une salle d'attente avec des sièges sous une toile.
Nous avons été très heureux de rencontrer quelques-uns des bénévoles là-bas. Ceux-ci étaient des volontaires venus seuls de plusieurs pays, de leur propre initiative et à leurs frais. En fait presque toute l'aide aux réfugiés dans ce camp est fournie par des bénévoles indépendants.
La première personne que nous avons rencontrée était Canadienne, Evangeline, une enseignante qui est venue pour aider et apprendre l’anglais aux enfants réfugiés. Elle nous a invités à visiter la magnifique petite école sous une tente, constituée de plusieurs salles de classes différentes ! Dans d'autres pièces une jeune fille belge enseignait les mathématiques et un jeune anglais enseigné également l'anglais. Quand nous avons visité il y avait quatre enseignants volontaires. L'ensemble de l'école a été construite et est gérée par des bénévoles.
We then visited the distribution center and were shown around by Ahmed, a 19 year old Kurd from the Syrian border who was in the camp with his brother. Ahmed told us that the people in the camp had all come from Chios in March. Like so many other people he had been told he had to wait until March for his relocation interview. Ahmed was proud to tell us he belonged to the scouts of Kurdistan. He speaks good english and showed us around the extraordinarily well organised distribution center for clothes, shoes and other needs of the residents of the camp. This is organised on the same lines as in many camps and as always has been created and run by volunteers. The difference here in Katsikas is that there is no overall organisation in charge and each volunteer comes out on his or her own. We then met Johanna Worsley from London who is in charge at the moment. She came out three weeks ago and is planning to stay three months. She was particularly distressed by the fact that there was only second hand underwear to offer, she had even been buying underwear with her own money. We realised immediately that this was something we could help with in the short time we had left in Greece. We went to “Jumbo” the Greek mega store where we bought 120 pairs of underpants, for men, women and children for the amazingly cheap sum of 175 euros and took them back to an incredibly grateful Johanna.
On leaving we encountered a group of Spanish Scouts who had a big van and were providing a transportation service, both for the people and the warehouse.
Nous avons ensuite visité le centre de distribution que nous a montré Ahmed, un Kurde de 19 ans de la frontière Syrienne, qui était dans le camp avec son frère. Ahmed nous a dit que les gens dans le camp étaient tous venus de l’île de Chios en Mars. Comme beaucoup d'autres personnes, on lui a dit qu'il devait attendre jusqu'à Mars prochain pour son entretien de réinstallation. Ahmed était fier de nous dire qu'il appartenait aux scouts de Kurdistan. Il parle bien anglais et nous a montré le centre de distribution extraordinairement bien organisé pour les vêtements, chaussures et autres besoins des résidents du camp. Ce camp est organisé comme de nombreux autres camps et comme toujours il a été créé et est géré par des bénévoles. La différence ici à Katsikas c’est qu'il n'y a pas d'organisation globale qui chapeaute le tout et chaque volontaire s’organise et se gère seul. Nous avons ensuite rencontré Johanna Worsley de Londres qui est là pour le moment. Elle est venue il y a trois semaines et prévoit de rester trois mois. Elle a été particulièrement affligée par le fait qu'il n'y avait pas de sous-vêtements à offrir, elle avait même été en acheter avec son propre argent. Nous avons immédiatement réalisé que cela était quelque chose que nous pourrions faire dans le peu de temps ou étions là en Grèce dans ce camp. Nous sommes donc allés à "Jumbo" le magasin Grec où nous avons acheté 120 paires de sous-vêtements, pour hommes, femmes et enfants pour la somme étonnamment pas cher de 175 euros et nous les avons ramenés à une Johanna incroyablement reconnaissante.
En partant, nous avons rencontré un groupe Scouts Espagnols qui avait une grande camionnette et proposé un service de transport, pour les personnes.
Sadly this was our last day in Greece and we had to start the homeward journey, but we were more than cheered up on the last evening when we had the wonderful news that Misbah, one of our Afghan friends back home had been granted ten years asylum in France!

Malheureusement, ce fut notre dernier jour en Grèce et nous avons dû commencer le voyage de retour, mais nous avons été tellement réjouis et réconfortés le dernier soir, quand nous avons eu la merveilleuse nouvelle que Misbah, un de nos amis afghans en France avait obtenu dix ans d’asile.
